Night Lights

If you are looking for a place to gamble and have fun but don’t want to be caught up in the frenetic pace of Las Vegas, then try Laughlin, Nevada. Laughlin is located just 95 miles south of Las Vegas and is a laid-back alternative to the hustle and bustle of the big city. The atmosphere of Laughlin is low key and the mood is relaxed.

Laughlin is located in the southern tip of Nevada on U.S. Highway 95. It is in the tri-state area of Nevada, Arizona and California. Bullhead City, Arizona is located directly across the Colorado River from Laughlin. Needles, California is approximately 25 miles south of Laughlin on U.S. Highway 95.

The town of Laughlin is named after Don Lauglin who built the first casino, the Riverside, in 1963.

The casinos are built along the banks of the Colorado River. You will find people strolling along the boardwalk that connects the casinos from the Riverside on down to the Pioneer. Benches are conveniently located all along the way so that you can sit and take a load off your feet as you watch the river flow by. If you don’t want to walk from casino to casino and don’t feel like getting your car out to drive, then take one of the boat taxis that ply the river between the casinos.

In the summer time, the river is filled to overflowing with people jet skiing and cruising the river in their boats in search of relief from the searing heat of the low desert. It is not unusual for the temperatures to climb to 130 degrees. Of course, you can always seek the coolness of the casinos and try your luck at the slot machines and the table games during the heat of the day.

Laughlin has no reason to hang its head in shame in the entertainment department either. The likes of Roy Clark, the Oakridge Boys, The Lettermen, Debbie Reynolds, Kenny Rogers, Mel Tillis, Glen Campbell, Ann-Margaret, Engelbert Humperdinck and the Chippendale’s have headlined in Laughlin, not to mention impersonators of Elvis, Tina Turner, George Strait, Garth Brooks, Ed Sullivan, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and the like.

Mel Tillis was the first big name headliner to appear in a Laughlin casino showroom back in the 70’s. The Riverside Casino decided to try to put Laughlin on the map by bringing in top-notch entertainment. At the time, the Riverside only had a small showroom, the Starview Room, set up. Tillis drew huge crowds for the event. He has been appearing at the Riverside about twice a year since then.

The Edward’s Twins, currently back by popular demand for the third year at the River Palms, do an excellent job of impersonating Cher, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, and many others. They do all their own make-up and costumes -- and even actually do their own singing. It is hard to tell that they are not actually the person that they are impersonating. Eddie Edwards’ impersonation of Cher is a showstopper. Eddie said that the question most asked of him about his impersonation of Cher is, “Where do you put ‘it’ in that skimpy-cut-up-to-here outfit?”

In the winter months, Laughlin is a delight. While most of the country is dealing with frigid climates, Laughlin basks in moderate to warm temperatures. The population more than doubles when the "snowbirds" flock to the area.

There are many campground resorts for those who take their homes with them when they travel. Many of the casinos have parking for rv’ers. Some are full facility while others are primitive. The River Palms and Harrah’s have parking facilities on the bluffs located on the west side of Casino Row with excellent views of the Colorado River valley.
